It was my favourite feel-good film for many years. It's not because "examining innocence and deciding to put it away and grow up" is less catchy than "loss of innocence." It's because many films, even if starring a young woman as the main character, take a male-dominated approach. Certain songs have become synonymous with the film, dialogue will be"d, and how could any of us ever forget some of the most iconic scenes of the film. Eleanor Bergstein, the film's writer, never liked the fact that people initially tagged the movie as just an "ugly duckling gets the guy" story: I conceived of her and made her a fighter. It made me think and makes me want to watch the movie again to see. I was particularly struck by the suggestion that Pennys interception of Dr Houseman during the merengue class he and Baby attend symbolises the role she will play in coming between the two characters. It may not be a staggeringly original one, but its a valid argument which he reiterates through a scene-by-scene interpretation of the film. Often, "coming of age" and "loss of innocence" go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Baby, being the do-gooder she is, comes to the rescue. He looks at how the film was able to capture the hearts and minds of people by exploring the way it fit so perfectly into the culture of the 80s, even though the film is set in the 60s. Reviews endorsements, released in 1987, Dirty Dancing is one of those films that is almost impossible to not know about, but its also one thats probably not taken very seriously.
